New parent-child center, "The New Hauner", part of the University of Munich hospital

RDS Partners delivered its contribution in response to the invitation to design a "visionary" children's and women's hospital. To provide for greater patient convenience, all departments for functional diagnostics and clinical medical services are incorporated into the entrance level. This lets outpatients avoid having to use the elevator. Bedridden patients can reach the examination and treatment areas by the shortest routes possible using primary passageways. The emergency room is accessible via the western entrance. Elective patients enter through the gate area and continue only a short distance to the centrally located outpatient ward with its functional diagnostics. The operating theater is located on the second floor, with a direct connector planned to interdisciplinary intensive care. The labor ward is planned in immediate proximity to the neonatology department, thereby providing a layout that best serves the treatment of very young patients. The required "wall-to-wall" solution for Level 1 of Natology has been provided for in the best manner possible. The neonatal perinatal center is located in direct proximity to the maternity and surgical areas as well as the neonatal monitoring station. Taken together, this helps ensure more efficient patient care. Rooming-in is provided for in all rooms. The new mother care facility allows newborns to be placed in a crib next to the mother's bed. In the children’s’ wards, a rooming-in option is provided for by means of a bed stowed in the patient's wardrobe cabinet. All space-enclosing elements are designed to accord with specific requirements and uses. Natural finishing materials are employed that deliberately contrast with transparent and lightweight materials. The use of bright colors both inside and out produces a serene and friendly atmosphere that promotes the recovery process of both children and mothers and also significantly enhances the quality of the workplace. The conception of a transparent hospital flooded with light is present throughout the new facility. Rhythmic patterns, wider and more open spaces and a constant visual connection to the outside gives the interior spaces greater variety and lends the facility a more communal character.
