The sewage works in Hattingen operates with activated sludge processing, a targeted nitrogen elimination system and biological deamonification. It is also capable of removing phosphor from wastewater. In addition to this the sewage works has maturation ponds in which wastewater is additionally purified. The sewage sludge produced during purification as well as food leftovers and fats are treated in digestion tanks. The produced sewage gas is used in a combined heat and power plant to generate electricity and heat. The sewage sludge is drained with machines, treated in an on-site sludge drying facility and subsequently loaded onto transports for disposal.
