Senior citizen residence, Castle Schleiden
Castle Schleiden is under monumental protection as it was built in the 12th century. It has been repurposed in accordance with monumental protection regulations as a senior citizen residence with 28 apartments. Each apartment has a living space of 40 to 70 sq. m. The barrier-free apartments all face south, which is the preferred line of sight towards the town and the surrounding mountain landscape. The infrastructure has been complemented with various open terraces, a library, a winter garden and a public restaurant. The castle complex has also been expanded with a short-term- and permanent-care facility with 30 spaces. The new building, constructed at the location of a former coach house, forms an attractive closure to the castle’s courtyard in a westerly direction. Historic structural- and decorating elements have been integrated in a modern utilization of forms without appearing to be historicizing.
