Construction of a new laboratory building on the campus of the University of Saarland in Saarbrucken

Working on behalf of the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research, RDS Partners designed and oversaw construction of a new laboratory building for the Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS), located on the campus of the University of Saarland in Saarbrücken.
The new facility, predominantly funded by Saarland and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), provides the six research groups at HIPS with some 4600 square meters of usable space, including lab areas made to S1 and S2 specifications.
White glass facade elements, horizontal bands of windows and a basement of architectural precast concrete serve to define the external appearance of the lab building. A spacious atrium brings natural light and fresh air into the building and, combined with the light colored floor and the exposed concrete wall surfaces, creates an open, communicative indoor atmosphere.
