Restoration of Hattingen’s old town hall
and conversion into a culture- and exhibition center
The old town hall was restored according to monumental regulations and transformed into an art- and event center with a lecture hall as well as work- and exhibition rooms. The traditional public passage at ground level was retained. The lavatory facilities and the building services are situated below the preceding submarket and are accessible from the main entrance so as to not additionally encroach on the room volume. Large glass elements are reminiscent of its former usage as a market hall. All constructions and installation with monumental value have been restored. An exciting juxtaposition has been created of century-old timber-framed oak and Ruhr sandstone masonry on the one hand and brushed steel profiles, glass and beech wood installations on the other. The project received the “Award for Good Constructions” from the Association of German architects BDA.
