Waldheim Correctional Facility
New detention facility 2 with space for 96 inmates and social therapy facilities

The Waldheim Correctional Facility in the center of the town of Waldheim has been located on the grounds of Waldheim Castle and a former Augustinian monastery since the 18th century. The transfer of patients requiring special therapeutic treatment for resocialization to the Waldheim facility from throughout the Saxon prison system created a need for additional, up-to-date detention space. Working within the context of the existing structure, the new four-story building serves to enclose the eastern side of the central courtyard of the prison, which is listed as a historic preservation site. The design of the facades, with plinth and window parapets made of colored precast concrete elements as well as finished front brickwork, reinterprets the design elements of the existing castle complex with respect to structure, materials and color. The new building comprises space for 96 inmates spread across 6 stations, together with rooms for therapeutic treatment on 2077 square meters of floor space. A solar thermal system is located on the roof of H2 to improve the building's energy efficiency.
