Renovation of the Preclinical Institute for Anatomy and Physiology

The building ensemble of the preclinical institute is relevant to the cityscape. The institute was built from 1876 to 1878 at the center of the Hanseatic city in an architectural brick style that was typical for the time. In 1912 an additional four-level building part for lecture- and preparation halls was created in the north wing. Teaching and research activities continued to be carried out throughout the restoration phase. The project was completed according to monumental protection guidelines, and the outer and inner appearance of the historic building has remained unchanged. The necessary expansions on the side of the courtyard resemble existing buildings in regard to building volume and height. However, a contrast is retained with transparent and closed glass facades. The additions for the lecture hall and laboratory building, resulting from usage restructuring and room schedule enhancement, have been positioned on the side of the courtyard.
