Sewage Works Essen-South

Conserving the overall appearance of the landscape was a top priority during the construction of the sewage works. We abandoned a concept for characteristically high buildings, which are usually required for e.g. sludge treatment. Indispensable buildings such as the screening- and operating building have been constructed as one-level buildings with greened roofs. The total facility’s connection size has been dimensioned for a population equivalent of 135,000 people. It consists of an operational building, a screening building with sand trap, a primary clarifier, an aeration basin, a settlement basin, a maturation pond and a high-water pumping station as well as an outlet- and rain overflow basin. The control room is located in the operations building. It is equipped with modern process control engineering for monitoring and controlling the facility, the analytics laboratory, the workshop, the social rooms and the office. The building also accommodates transformers, switchgears and rotary piston blowers to generate pressurized air.
