Festive Official Opening
Helmholtz Center for Infection Research (HZI)
Construction of a new laboratory building on the campus of the University of Saarland in Saarbrucken
After a mere two-year construction period, the new Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS), designed and executed by RDS Partners, has been completed and is now largely occupied. Ceremonies marking the opening of the new building took place on Friday, October 2, 2015 and were attended by Prime Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, Prof. Wiestler, President of the Helmholtz Association, and Saarland University President, Professor Volker Linneweber.
The approximately € 31 million in total costs for the new laboratory facility came primarily from the State of Saarland, drawing on resources from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Special Investment Fund. Professor Dirk Heinz, Scientific Director of the HZI, underscored the outstanding cooperation between all parties. Professor Rolf Müller, managing director of HIPS, and the six research groups at HIPS, now have at their disposal some 4600 square meters of useable space under one roof.
