Building for research
Expansion of the Island of Riems for the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut
The specialist publication “Bauen für die Forschung - Ausbau der Insel Riems für das Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut” – written by the State Construction and Property Office of Greifswald – has now been published by the Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development and Construction. The jacket describes this pioneering project as follows:
Starting in 2006, the over 100 year-old Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (FLI) on the Island of Riems in the Bay of Greifswald was expanded according to plans from the Swiss-German general contractor association Itten+Brechbühl AG, Bern und Rauh Damm Stiller Partner Planungsgesellschaft mbH, Greifswald, to become one of the world’s leading research institutions in the animal health sector. Thanks to this comprehensive project, funded by the federal government, which includes construction of the new laboratory and stall buildings as the core of the facility as well as various other structures, the FLI today is one of the most state-of-the-art and safe research institutions covering this range of research areas. Despite the unique specialization and mechanization of the building, the participating partners succeeded in constructing an institutional site on the Island of Riems that fulfills the highest architectural standards.
