Gesamtschule Hattingen Expansion
at the Lange Horst location
In an invitational competition followed by a presentation to the Hattingen city council, RDS Partner’s contribution was recognized as the best work.
The building ensemble of the Gesamtschule Hattingen at the Lange Horst location is part of the garden city of Hüttenau. The Horst school was built by the architect Fritz Schopohl in 1923.
The three-wing facility of the Horst school represents a school building that is typical of the time it was built. In front of the school there is a spacious school and sports area, which forms a grandstand-like entrance to the school building.
This specific situation of the site is respected and appropriately recognized with the construction of the new building: The new building fits harmoniously into the existing building structure and is subordinate to the urban framework plan.
The new building is positioned in parallel to the existing building on the lower schoolyard and takes over the cubature of the west wing, thereby preserving the scale.
The central wing of the existing building, with the urban pediment, remains visible from afar. Its organizational principle consists of the longitudinal arrangement of the classrooms with an orientation towards the sports field.
The room area for 12th grade is on level 0. The natural science rooms are located on level 1, which is connected to the existing site via the footbridge, and the room area for 13th grade is on level 2.
Each level has an outdoor area protected against the elements that invites people to linger.
