Expansion of RWTH Aachen University Clinic
Construction of a New Central Operating Room with Intensive Care Unit

A jury consisting of top-level professionals, politicians, and administrators met on March 30th, 2017 to judge an architectural competition staged by the University Clinic RWTH Aachen.
RDS Partner developed a solution for constructing a new central operating area, including intensive care unit, to optimize internal processes and improve the services offered by the University Clinic. The university plans to establish a forward-thinking central operating department. The new operating department will ensure the performance capabilities, specialization, and growth of the University Clinic in the treatment of critically ill patients. In addition, it will ensure shorter wait times for specialized operations and improved patient treatment. The planning and construction project is composed of several modules, and is to be completed on the grounds of the University Clinic Aachen, which is protected as a historic landmark. The effective area is roughly 17,500 square meters. A large portion of this area will be located underground. Planned modules include a central operating area with 31 operating rooms, an outpatient operating area with 4 operating rooms, 3 intensive care units with a total of 50 beds, anesthesia, a bed preparation unit, and a central main entrance with patient reception area and service facilities.
A total of 150 million euros are budgeted for the project, as well as 30 million for initial equipment installation. No other project at the clinic has ever matched the scale of this central operating area construction: The project is the largest ever undertaken since the University Clinic was constructed roughly 30 years ago, and is by far the largest investment in the area in recent years.
