Katrin Rüter in conversation with Arne Thorben Damm
In the July issue of the professional journal das Krankenhaus, Editor-in-Chief Katrin Rüter speaks with Arne Thorben Damm about current challenges and developments in hospital design and planning. Healthcare reform, the shift toward outpatient care, and increasing specialization are transforming the healthcare landscape and creating new demands for planning and design. Hospitals today must be conceived as flexible, adaptable, and resilient environments capable of responding to medical, organizational, and technological change over the long term.
The interview explores the complex interplay of medical processes, nursing care, hygiene, medical technology, digitalization, logistics, economic efficiency, and architecture. Good hospital planning therefore starts with understanding workflows and translating them into effective spatial and organizational structures. At the same time, hospitals remain places where people live and work: intuitive wayfinding, daylight, quality of space, outdoor areas, and healing environments are essential elements of good healthcare architecture.
Further topics include life-cycle costs, sustainability, and resilience, as well as the question of how hospital buildings can remain adaptable and capable of evolving over decades. Ultimately, the quality of a hospital is demonstrated not only on the day it opens, but above all by how naturally it functions in everyday use and how effectively it can respond to change.
