Clinic at the University of Munich
Construction of new Großhadern campus

Alongside its Danish project partners, RDS Partner was one of the 18 international teams to submit a proposal for the new construction of the Großhadern campus. The clinic complex at the Ludwig-Maximilian University will be completely renovated during ongoing operations over the next 25 years. Totaling around a billion euros, it is Bavaria’s largest state building project since the clinic was constructed in the 1960s/1970s.
The goal of reorganizing the clinic as part of the “Ideenteil” district, with around 400,000 square meters of space at the Großhadern site, is to redesign and restructure the medical facilities into five interdisciplinary organ centers – the cardiac, lung, and vascular center (HLG), the oncological center (ONKO), the abdominal, pelvic, and transplantation center (BBT), the head center (KOPF), and the musculoskeletal center (MSK) – each of which will integrate specialist, disease-specific usable areas for healthcare, research, and teaching on an interdisciplinary basis. The nursing wards will be arranged with the centers whenever possible, allowing for flexibility in their equipment and utilization across neighboring wards.
The implementation part of the project includes the 1st phase of construction, representing the start of restructuring the clinic. With allocated usable space of approx. 69,000 square meters, the cardiac, lung, and vascular center (HLG), oncological center (ONKO) and diagnostic center (DIAG) as a joint project with the Ludwig-Maximilian University will act as a key service provider within both institutions, providing highly specialized and flexible laboratory areas and offering synergies for research and healthcare. In addition, the overarching areas of the main entrance, staff cafeteria, and pharmacy will be integrated into planning for the three centers.
Overall, the Großhadern campus will offer 1,500 beds after the end of the restructuring project.
