Rhine Special-Needs School Bedburg-Hau
New building expansion and alteration

The building expansion consists of a classroom section with seven class- and group rooms, three care units and a sports area with a single-field gymnasium and swimming pool for swimming lessons. The existing school building was optimized and altered for usage. The main entrance has been moved to the center of the newly constructed ensemble. The storage and new area are accessible from this central point via a connection corridor, which acts as the backbone of the building. Ramps in the interior- and exterior area correspond to terrain topography. Class- and group rooms face tree-covered open spaces. Brick masonry and zinc roofs integrate materials from existing structures. The project has received the School Construction Prize form the Ministry for School and Advanced Training NRW in cooperation with the Chamber of Architects NRW.
